The Making of a Timeless Home
One of the questions we hear most often from clients is: "How do we create a home that won't feel dated in a few years?"
It's a thoughtful question, especially when you're making significant investments in a renovation or custom home. The answer, surprisingly, has very little to do with avoiding trends. In our experience, the homes that stand the test of time aren't necessarily the most neutral, the most traditional, or the most restrained. They're the homes that are thoughtfully designed around the people who live in them.
At Knight Varga, we often talk about creating "forever homes" – spaces that support our clients through different stages of life while continuing to feel relevant, beautiful, and deeply personal.
It Starts with Lifestyle, Not Materials
Long before we discuss finishes or furnishings, we spend time understanding how our clients live.
How do they entertain?
Do they cook every night or gather around takeout and conversation?
Are grandchildren frequent visitors?
Do they work from home?
Do they travel often?
Do they have a dog who follows them from room to room, or a favourite spot where the cat spends the afternoon sunning itself?
The most successful homes aren't designed around a floor plan—they're designed around the people, routines, and pets that bring them to life.
The answers to these questions influence every design decision that follows. Because timeless design isn't about choosing the "right" stone or paint colour. It's about creating a home that genuinely supports the way you want to live.
The Foundation Matters Most
While trends naturally come and go, certain principles remain constant.
Thoughtful space planning.
Well-proportioned rooms.
Quality craftsmanship.
Natural materials that age gracefully.
These are the elements that continue to perform beautifully year after year. A well-designed floor plan will outlast almost any design trend.
Personality Never Goes Out of Style
One of the biggest misconceptions about timeless design is that it requires playing it safe. We disagree. Some of our favourite projects include rooms with bold wallpaper, collected artwork, meaningful heirlooms, and colours that reflect our clients' personalities.
The goal isn't to create a home that could belong to anyone. It's to create a home that could only belong to you. Those personal layers are often what make a space feel timeless in the first place.
Designing for the Long Term
When we're helping clients make decisions, we're often thinking years ahead.
Will this material age beautifully?
Will this layout continue to support the family as life evolves?
Will this room still feel relevant when tastes inevitably shift?
These aren't always the most exciting questions, but they're often the most important. It's one of the reasons we encourage clients to invest in the foundational elements of a home first. Beautiful architecture, quality millwork, thoughtful lighting, and durable materials provide the framework for a home that can evolve over time.
A Home That Tells Your Story
The most successful projects in our portfolio don't reflect a specific year or trend. They reflect the people who live there.
Their routines.
Their travels.
Their collections.
Their memories.
Those are the details that give a home staying power.
As designers, our goal isn't to create homes that look exactly like everyone else's. It's to create homes that still feel like you years from now. Because the best homes don't simply stand the test of time. They become more meaningful because of it.
The Client Experience
“More than ten years ago, Trish helped us design our family home, and looking back, it remains one of the best decisions we made. At the time, we loved the beautiful spaces she created, but what we couldn't fully appreciate then was just how well her design choices would stand the test of time.
Over the years, our home has been the backdrop for raising two children, welcoming a dog into the family, hosting countless birthday parties, holiday gatherings, sleepovers, and spontaneous dinners with friends. The kitchen has seen everything from school projects to late-night conversations, and the living spaces have been well-loved and well-used every single day.
What amazes me is that after all these years, the home still feels as fresh, functional, and relevant as it did when we first moved in. The materials and finishes have proven incredibly durable, and the design itself feels timeless rather than tied to a particular trend. Friends who visit for the first time are often surprised when they learn how long ago the renovation was completed.
Trish has a unique ability to design for the way people actually live, creating spaces that are both beautiful and practical. She looks beyond what's popular in the moment and focuses on what will continue to work for a family for years to come.
We still love our home today, and if we were starting another project tomorrow, Knight Varga Interiors would be our first call.”
